The Phantom of the Opera

Based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of the hideously-deformed Phantom, who lurks in the catacombs beneath the stage of the Paris Opera. The Phantom exercises an exhilarating reign of terror over the Opera’s occupants in his quest to turn the young soprano he loves into a star.

The musical, directed by Harold Prince and produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Company, Inc., is the most successful stage musical of all time, with worldwide ticket sales exceeding $3.2 billion (far surpassing the highest-grossing film, Titanic, which has grossed $1.9 billion worldwide). The winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this New York production has been seen by 10 million people and grossed over $550 million. Worldwide, The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by more than 100 million people.

The longest-running show currently playing on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera became the second longest-running show in Broadway history on February 4, 2003 when it played performance #6,681 and surpassed the 6,680 performance run of Les Miserables, putting it in second place behind Cats.
